Mayor Scott Conger of Jackson, Tennessee has this week taken to Twitter to share how he plans to turn the city into what he called a “Bitcoin Hub”.
The plans include potential cryptocurrency payroll conversions and bitcoin mining to help Jackon “lead the way” when it comes the adoption of using bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies for daily use.
Although Mayor Conger used the term “bitcoin hub” he also suggested that Litecoin and Ethereum could be part of his plans via the use of hashtags. Speaking over social media the mayor claimed that his city is in a position to “lead the way in currency adoption”. He then went on to claim that by local governments like own setting the example, they could inspire “new industrial revolution” that could ultimately “close the wealth gap”.
In more generalized plans announced on Wednesday, Conger claimed that the local government could use dollar-cost averaging crypto payments, thus giving staff and citizens of the city assets that are likely to appreciate in value. Providing people with crypto assets could “bridge the gap and financially empower people” according to the Mayor.
As well as sending out as a series of tweets detailing his plans for the city’s crypto adoption, Major Scott Conger also changed his profile picture on the social media platform. In his new profile picture, Mayor Conger included laser eyes – a symbol that’s been adopted by prominent figures who believe that bitcoin’s value can and will surpass the coveted $100,000 mark. A Number of politicians and celebrities have adopted the symbol, including US Senator Cynthia Lummis, who has been very vocal in her pro-bitcoin stance.
Earlier in the year, Miami became the first high profile city to announce similar plans to adopt cryptocurrency use. Mayor Francis Suarez’s attempts to push his city towards becoming a major US crypto hub were given a major boost as commissioners have voted to back the mayor’s proposals.
The proposals put forward by the mayor in Miami could see the city take further steps than Jackson, TN. Mayor Suarez’s plans to permit BTC payments for salaries, taxes and other fees, as well as being able to use bitcoin to invest in the state treasury.
Miami and Jackson will join Tampa, San Francisco and New York to become US cities that are making moves to embrace bitcoin. The there aforementioned cities currently have a number of bitcoin ATMs and merchants who accept cryptocurrency payments.
Elsewhere in the world, bitcoin and crypto is being adopted in Canada, with Vancouver becoming the leading city. Over in Europe, Amsterdam, London and Zurich are all increasing their crypto adoption strategies. In the middle east Tel Aviv in Israel is leading the line when it comes to being a crypto city and is home to the most active Bitcoin Meetup Group with almost 4,000 members.
